Saudis Soliciting Funds for Jihad, Cont'd

By Matthew Levitt

Andy's blog earlier today presents very disturbing evidence that despite some positive measures Saudi officials still have far to go when it comes to controlling the funding and promotion of radical Islamic extremism within the Kingdom. But speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations this week, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal depicted the Kingdom as the victim of "an unjustified intense onslaught" and a "scapegoat" of the 9/11 tragedy.

Over 18 months ago I wrote a piece on the status of Saudi efforts -- real and promised -- to curb terror financing from within the Kingdom. From the August television program Andy highlighted it seems clear not only that the infamous "Accounts 98" still exist but that the pseudo-governmental Muslim World League remains at the forefront of efforts by official religious leaders to promote violent jihad.

My article, Charity Begins in Riyadh, was written a year and half ago - but it could have been written this week.
